Strategy Breakdown
Why do strategic conversations sometimes go nowhere?
Here are the most common issues I’ve found, working with teams:
The conversation never actually happens: Teams get so wrapped up in execution that they seem to actually physically lose the ability to think deeply about where they’re headed and why.
Future Plans aren’t connected to Now Plans: Some companies have a clear long-term dream they’re chasing, but they don’t make space in the day for Next Actions that could lead to these dreams becoming reality
Not enough context: Information that could inform a great strategy lives in multiple teams who don’t talk to each other, so no one is able to see the full picture.
An internal narrative that “We don’t need/have time for strategy”: Saying you don’t have time for strategy makes as little sense as saying you don’t have time to look at a map when you’re lost. But that doesn’t prevent this weird narrative from forming within many teams.
Here’s the reality: Whatever your reason is for NOT focusing on strategy,
It’s an excuse,
That could cost you your company.
Whatever you have to do to clear these blockers on strategic conversations,
Do it.
Otherwise,
You might end up
Without any company
To strategize about.
