Wishing for skills they don’t have
Ahh... the beautiful sounds of a new CEO learning to delegate:
"How the HECK don't they get it?!"
"It's been 3 weeks - HOW is this not done yet?!"
"How could they POSSIBLY think that was the right decision?!"
"Seriously?! Do I have to do EVERYTHING myself?!"
If it's any comfort, know this:
It's the same experience for basically everyone.
But the best founders will eventually learn their way out of it,
And from what I've seen, it essentially comes down to this:
No matter how little your hiring budget, how little time you have for management, or how little the task is you're trying to offload,
Wishing your new hire had the skills you want them to have
Won't make anything better.
When an employee isn't performing as you need them to, you can either:
Give feedback and wait for improvement
Double down on training them up
Or fire them. And get someone new.
And that's it.
Getting frustrated about the work they can't perform is a waste of your energy.
And if it's all you're doing in reaction to this problem,
It's not the employee's performance that's the core problem;
It's yours.
